Alsace is French, but feels German. A place where the bakeries sell pretzels alongside baguettes. Probably because Nicole is an unabashed Francophile, we didn't fall in love with Alsace and prefer the more fully-French areas of France. Nonetheless, for wine lovers (especially whites!) there is a bounty of places to explore in the area.
1. Domaine Paul Kluber
Hands down our favorite winery visit in the Alsace region. Located outside of the main tourist areas, during our visit the winemaker could not have been more generous with his time, explaining the nuances of each of the over ten wines we tasted. The passion for the product shows.
4. Route des Vins Alsace
If you at all like wine and have access to a car, don't visit Alsace without driving the Route des Vins. Over one hundred miles of backroads through Alsace's vineyards and fairytale villages. On the map below, the wine glasses mark villages along the way (although not an exhaustive list). Our favorites, Eguisheim and Riquewihr, are both within easy driving distance of Colmar.
2. Racing Club Strasbourg
My favorite memory from our time in Alsace. Passionate fans and an underdog team you can't help pulling for. For anyone visiting Alsace over a weekend when the Racing Club has a home game, highly recommended!
Another great winery conveniently located near Domaine Paul Kluber, and a short drive from Colmar. The tasting room operators were very friendly, informative, and made extra time to show us around the facilities.
