With the luxury of no time restrictions, Nicole and I have been taking advantage of layovers to see places we might not otherwise explore. Earlier, I wrote about seeing Helsinki, Finland this way. A few weeks back we utilized a layover to investigate Lima, Peru.

Because of a scheduling snafu, after spending a week in New York, we flew overnight to Paris, where we spent one day, before flying to Lima for two nights, and then onto our final destination of Chile. That travel itinerary is not advisable.  

But once we made it to Lima, being my first time in South America, I found a second wind and became excited to explore. Rather than try to see a museum or other landmark, we focused exclusively on the Miraflores District where we stayed. 

This wasn't entirely happenstance inasmuch as TripAdvisor ranks Miraflores and the Miraflores Boardwalk as the #3 and #4 respectively top things to do in Lima. 

Of course, one day is not enough to really get a feel for a place. 

So I can't say that I'm an expert on Lima. But the Miraflores Boardwalk lived up to the hype. In my opinion, don't visit Lima without making a point to stroll this picturesque route. Parachute gliders continuously circle overhead, brightly colored art and sculptures line the way, and the Pacific ocean provides a magnificent backdrop.

The areas we passed in the Uber from the airport to our hotel made clear that Lima is still a developing city. In contrast, the Miraflores area felt decidedly affluent. Maybe someday Nicole and I will have an opportunity to return to Lima. Until then, I'm happy with our day strolling the Boardwalk.
